How this topsoil calculator works

Area × added depth is converted into cubic feet, settlement allowance is added, and the total is expressed as both cubic yards and whole bags.

How to use it

  1. Area to cover. Enter the value in sq ft.
  2. Added soil depth. Enter the value in in.
  3. Bag size. Enter the value in cu ft.
  4. Settlement allowance. Enter the value in %.
  5. Request the result. Add your email, then select “Email & show my result.”

What to do with the number

Loose soil can settle after watering and grading, which is why a settlement allowance is useful. For raised grades or deep fills, calculate each depth zone separately instead of averaging a very uneven site.

Planning estimate

Use this result as a starting point, not a guarantee. Product specifications, site conditions, manufacturer guidance, local codes, taxes, labor, tolerances, and rounding can change the real requirement or cost.
