Quick answer

Measure the actual floor area, then add waste before converting square footage into boxes. Straight rectangular rooms may need roughly 5–10% extra; diagonal layouts, complex cuts and pattern matching often need more.

How to work it out

  1. Measure each rectangular floor section and calculate length × width.
  2. Add the sections together.
  3. Choose a waste allowance that matches the layout complexity.
  4. Divide required square footage by the coverage printed on each box.
  5. Round up to full boxes.

Example

A 12×15 room is 180 sq ft. With 10% waste, plan for 198 sq ft. If each box covers 22 sq ft, you would need nine boxes.

What can change the answer

Always use the exact box coverage of the product you plan to buy; nominal plank dimensions are not a substitute for packaged coverage.
