Quick answer

Gas cost per mile is fuel price ÷ MPG. EV energy cost per mile is electricity price ÷ miles per kWh, with charging loss included when appropriate. Using local rates and your actual efficiency makes the comparison much more useful than national averages.

How to work it out

  1. Enter annual mileage or compare on a per-mile basis.
  2. Use your gasoline price and realistic MPG.
  3. Use your electricity price and realistic EV efficiency.
  4. Include charging losses for home charging.
  5. Compare energy cost first, then separately consider insurance, depreciation, maintenance and financing.

Example

At $3.50/gal and 30 MPG, gasoline costs about 11.7¢/mile. At $0.15/kWh and 3.5 mi/kWh, electricity is about 4.3¢/mile before charging-loss adjustment.

What can change the answer

Energy cost alone is not total ownership cost. Vehicle price, depreciation, insurance and public fast-charging use can outweigh the fuel difference.
