Quick answer
Level 2 is usually several times faster than Level 1 because it delivers much more AC power. The useful comparison is the same amount of battery energy divided by the effective power available from each setup.
How to work it out
- Pick the same kWh target for both charging methods.
- Enter realistic Level 1 power, commonly around 1.2–1.8 kW.
- Enter the Level 2 power your car and circuit can actually support.
- Apply the same charging-efficiency assumption.
- Compare hours, not generic miles-per-hour marketing numbers.
Example
For 45 kWh of battery energy, 1.4 kW Level 1 charging can take well over a day, while 7.7 kW Level 2 can complete the same energy transfer overnight.
What can change the answer
Installation cost, panel capacity and how many miles you actually drive matter as much as maximum charging speed.
