Quick answer

Charging time is roughly battery energy to add divided by effective charging power, adjusted for losses. The effective power is limited by the lowest bottleneck in the chain—often the vehicle’s onboard AC charger or the circuit/EVSE output.

How to work it out

  1. Calculate the battery energy needed between starting and target state of charge.
  2. Use the lower of vehicle AC charging limit and EVSE output.
  3. Account for charging efficiency.
  4. Divide required battery energy by effective battery charging power.
  5. Treat the result as an estimate because charging power can taper or vary.

Example

If you need to add 45 kWh and the car can effectively accept about 6.9 kW after losses, the estimate is roughly 6.5 hours.

What can change the answer

A 48A EVSE does not guarantee the vehicle can accept its full output. The car’s onboard charger is often the limiting factor.
