Bedroom-count charts are useful only as a rough starting point. A better estimate converts furniture, boxes and other contents into cargo volume, then adjusts for realistic loading efficiency before comparing with published truck capacity.
How to work it out
- Estimate the volume of packed boxes and major furniture.
- Include bulky items that create unusable gaps.
- Adjust for loading efficiency rather than assuming every cubic foot can be filled perfectly.
- Compare the requirement with the rental company’s published cargo volume.
- Leave reserve capacity if avoiding a second trip matters more than minimizing truck size.
Example
Two 2-bedroom homes can require very different trucks: a minimally furnished apartment and a house with garage storage, sectional furniture and many boxes may differ by hundreds of cubic feet.
Payload weight is separate from cargo volume. A truck can run out of legal payload before it runs out of physical space.
